The  first  day  of  your  tour  is  simply  an  arrival day with no pre-organised activities. In order to allow time to relax and  See  ome of the sights ou may    wish to add pre tour accommodation. n  arrival  please  ask  at  the reception  for information when the pre departure meeting will be held.Sabah’s  lively  capital  city,  Kota Kinabalu  (or KK as it is  ffectionately known) is best-known as  a  starting  point  for  various adventures and wildlife  excursions,  but  also offers  itsown  beguiling  array  of  attractions  as  wellThe  cultural  diversity  of the  city ensures intriguing  culinary  offerings  and  there  are  countless museums, temples, parks and markets to  wander.  The  city  is  home  to The  Sabah State  Museum, a  large  complex  that  is also  home to  the Science and  Technology Centre,  the  Ethnobotanical  Gardens  and  the eritage Village. The Monsopiad Cultural Village (Kampung Monsopiad)   features cultural shows related  to  the  Kadazan-Dusun culture,  and  is well worth a visit. The Padang Merdeka or 'Town Field' is also worth a visit – it is the site  here the declaration of Sabah's independence took place on 16 September 1963. You can enjoy a number of optional  xcursions to  explore  the  jungle and island scenery surrounding  KK.  For  example,  you  can  do afull  or  half  day  kayaking  tour around  the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a cluster of autiful  tropical islands  off  the  shore of  Kota Kinabalu  that offer  spectacular  opportunities or  snorkelling  and  swimming in crystal-clear  waters. Kota  Kinabalu - Kinabalu  National  Park. Dominated  by  Mt  Kinabalu,  the  highest mountain  between  the Himalayas  and  NewGuinea, the  Mt  Kinabalu  World  Heritage  Site has a range of diverse habitats that are perfect for  exploring  on  foot,  from  sub-alpine  forest to  rich tropical  lowland.  The  mountain  and  its surroundings  are  among  the  most  important biological sites in the world, with between 5000and 6000 species  of  plants,  326  species  of birds,  and  more  than  100  mammalian  speciesidentified. Among this rich collection of wildlifeare famous species such as the gigantic  afflesia plants.  This  is  the  largest  flower in the  world, hich also happens to emit the stench of rotting flesh  to  attract  the flies  that  spread  its  pollen. From  here  you  can  also  visit  the  Poring  hot springs. We  will  also  stop  at  the  Kundasang War Memorial and Gardens, built to commemorate he  2428  prisoners  who  died  at  the  Sandakan OW  Lamp.  he memorial has four interlocking ardens  to  represent  the  homelands  of  those who died there. Our lodging  for  the  evening  is  the  Lupa  Masa Jungle  Camp,  located  next  to  the  national park. Facilities are limited here, but the  etting is  superb.  Alongside  the  camp  is  a stunning waterfall  and  river  whose  fresh, clear  water  comes  right  off  Mt  Kinabalu.  This  is  one  of the  few  opportunities  in  Sabah  to experience camping in original primary ‘big tree’ forest.  Please Note: The walk to our jungle lodge can be muddy and is uphill in places, so walking shoes are  recommended.  Anyone  with  reasonable  fitness should  be  able  to  complete  the  walk without  difficulty,  but  please contact  us  if  you are concerned. For those wishing to climb Mt Kinabalu, please see our Mt Kinabalu Add-on. This can be added to the end of  our tour, or included instead of the jungle camp at an additional cost. If you are considering  trying  to  include  this hike  in  your trip, please ensure you enquire well in advance as this trek is permit regulated and is often fully booked in advance.

Kinabalu  National  Park  -  Deramakot  ForestReserve.  You  will  spend  two  days  in  thespectacular Deramakot  Forest Reserve, whichoffers  unique  opportunities  for  observingwildlife. In fact, about 75% of all the mammalsin the Sabah  egion can be found in Deramakot, and the reserve is a key habitat for five globallythreatened large mammals; the  rangutan,  he Pygmy Elephant, the Banteng (a species of wild cattle), the Proboscis Monkey and the Clouded Leopard. You  will  have plenty  of  time  to  explore  the extraordinary biodiversity  of  the  reserve  by embarking on nature hikes in the  egion, and by taking part in a nocturnal safari by 4WD vehicle to spot wildlife in the dark. You can also watch the sunrise  ver the dense rainforest canopy, a truly  beautiful  sight  and  one  that  you'll  never  Forget.  During  your  time  in  the  Deramakot Forest Reserve  you  will  also  learn  about  local conservation efforts and innovative sustainable  logging  rocedures  (Deramakot is  seen  as  a model for modern forest management practices and  is  the first  reserve  in South  East  Asia  to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council).Overnight  -  Deramakot Forest  Reserve  (B:2, L:2, D:2) 

Deramakot  Forest  Reserve  - Kinabatangan Region.  We  embark  on  a  river  cruise  to  one of  the  many ox-bow  lakes  on  the floodplain of  the  Kinabatangan  Region,  spotting  wildlife as  we  travel  downriver. The  area  is known  for its    biodiversity  and  you  may  see orangutans, proboscis  monkeys,  pig  tailed macaque,  long tailed  macaque,  red  and    grey  leaf  monkeys, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, hornbills and the slow loris. This conservation area is one of onlytwo in the world where ten species of primateexist.Arriving at the small village of Bukit Garama we'llhave  a  light  local  lunch before  continuing  our journey  by  road  to our  riverside  lodge  for  the night. Later head out on a river cruise in search of wildlife followed by a buffet dinner or local and western style food. After dinner there will be an optional night walk. Overnight  Kinabatangan  Region (B, L, D)

Kinabatangan  Region  -  Abai  village.  Today  we travel by river boat through the Ramsar WetlandReserve and participate  n a local reforestationproject.  This  is  a  great  opportunity  to  lend a  hand  by  planting fast-growing  fruit  treeswhich will  rovide a valuable source of food for animals and help preserve the region for future visitors and locals alike. e  reach  the  village  of  Abai  where  locals welcome us into their homes for a truly unique and  privileged  glimpse  into  riverside  life.  Your our leader will brief you on what to expect in the village and appropriate dress and behaviour. We  enjoy  the  hospitality  of  our  hosts  who prepare  local food for  us  while  staying  in wooden stilted housing.  Overnight  -  Aba    

Abai Village - Sepilok. Sepilok is the location of the  famed  Orangutan  sanctuary  which  we  will visit on day 7 for your best  hance to see these magnificent  primates  up  close  in  their  natural habitat.  You  will  stay close  to  the  sanctuary  in Sepilok, in wooden lodgings in the rainforest. The  Sepilok  Orangutan Rehabilitation  Centre was  founded  to  protect  orphaned  orangutans and other wildlife species and today has around 60 to 80 orangutans living freely in the reserve along  ith younger orang-utans housed in the nurseries. There are two feedings daily which is the best chance to see the  rangutans close up (although sightings cannot be guaranteed) and we plan the day around these events.  ear to the  anctuary is the Rainforest Discovery entre which can be visited between feedings on  day  8.  There  are  nature trails  in  the centre ncluding  a  canopy  walkway.  Exploring  the centre we may see hornbills and flying squirrels and  just listening  to  the impressive  sounds  of the jungle is an experience not to be forgotten. n early 2014 the Sun Bear Conservation  entre opened its doors to visitors and if you wish, you have time also on day 8 to include a visit to thisvery  worthwhile  project.  The  world’s  smallest bear species, the sun bear is under threat fromdeforestation and this centre houses rphaned and  rescued  sun  bears  in  order  to  rehabilitate them.A full list of the optional excursions on offer in Sepilok can  e  found  at  the  end  of  these  trip notes. Sepilok  -  Kudat.  We  fly  to  Kudat,  on  the  very tip  of  Borneo.  Kudat  is  a  small  port  town with welcoming  locals and  a  very  laid-back atmosphere,  and  is  home  to  a  large  Chinesetemple  and  a great fresh  seafood  market. We  stay near  the  sea,  where  we have theopportunity  to  enjoy  a  BBQ  on  the beach  at  sunset. You will also have the portunity to go swimming, snorkelling, fishing and hiking in and around the beautiful coves and beaches of this remote  orner  f northern Borneo.  full list of the optional excursions on offer in Kudat  can be  found  at  the  end  of  these  trip notes.Please note:  In  some instances,  due  to  limited seat availability, we may have to substitute theflight  back  to  Kudat  with  a  drive up  the  coast nstead. Kudat - Kota  Kinabalu.  In  the  morning  you  arefree to continue exploring the pristine beaches and coves of Kudat.
